Coulombe<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For many of Anglican upbringing, the <i>cultus</i> of the Sacred Heart of Jesus seems a rather garlicky and ethnic sort of thing – fine for Italians, Frenchmen, Spaniards, or best Irishmen, but utterly unsuited for the more sophisticated. So many of the Sacred Heart pictures are effeminate, and things like the Auto League of the Sacred Heart merely tacky. In a word, it is so very <i>Roman</i>, and utterly un-Anglican!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While this this may be a not uncommon set of views, it is utterly incorrect. The key role of many Monarchs, presidents, and nobility in spreading the devotion through its history should end any worry about its social status; the Sacred Heart’s traditional popularity among soldiers and other occupations traditionally demanding self-sacrifice should dispel any fears regarding its masculinity. But, in truth, it actually has deep – if not immediately apparent – roots in British Christianity.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Although the form in which we now have it is that delivered to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (and notably sneered at by James Joyce in <i>Dubliners</i>), the roots of the Sacred Heart devotion lie as far back as the Crucifixion, and the piercing of Christ’s side by <a href="http://www.archatl.com/ministries/disabilities/saints/saint_info.php?0=March+15&feast_date=March+15&1=Saint+Longinus&full_name=Saint+Longinus&2=Blindness&patronage=Blindness" target="_blank">St. Longinus</a> with the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_Lance" target="_blank">Holy Lance</a>. Devotion to the wound in Christ’s side and the instruments of His Passion was widespread throughout Christendom, and nowhere <a href="http://bg.convdocs.org/docs/index-62043.html?page=6" target="_blank">more than in Medieval England</a>. Closely tied to this practice was the veneration of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_of_Christ" target="_blank">Christ’s blood</a>, centred at <a href="http://www.icotswolds.com/hailes-abbey/" target="_blank">Hailes</a>, <a href="http://www.ourdacorum.org.uk/page_id__387_path__0p3p.aspx" target="_blank">Ashridge</a>, and <a href="http://www.christianity.com/church/church-history/timeline/1201-1500/mysterious-relic-brought-to-westminster-11629836.html" target="_blank">Westminster</a>, symbolised by the <a href="http://www.academia.edu/3294695/Holy_Vessell_and_Blyssed_Bloode_Malorys_Personal_Symbolism_of_the_Grail." target="_blank">Holy Grail</a> (which vessel, however, is likelier to be found today at <a href="http://www.catedraldevalencia.es/en/el-santo-caliz.php" target="_blank">Valencia</a> than <a href="http://www.chalicewell.org.uk/" target="_blank">Glastonbury</a>), and memorialised by the oath “<a href="http://www.thefreedictionary.com/'sblood" target="_blank">God’s Blood</a>!” All <a href="http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/15714a.htm" target="_blank">five wounds of Christ</a> taken together were similarly revered throughout Europe: the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerusalem_cross" target="_blank">Jerusalem Cross</a> was the badge of both the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crusades" target="_blank">Crusaders</a> and the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_Jerusalem" target="_blank">Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem</a> (its large central Cross represents Christ’s side/heart wound, and it remains the badge of such modern Holy Land-related bodies as the <a href="http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/institutions_connected/oessh/index_en.htm" target="_blank">Order of the Holy Sepulchre</a>, the <a href="http://www.custodia.org/" target="_blank">Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land</a>, and the <a href="http://en.lpj.org/" target="_blank">Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem</a>). They made their appearance on the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Portugal#Portuguese_shield" target="_blank">coat of arms of long-time English ally Portugal</a>, were the object of a <a href="http://sarumuse.wordpress.com/2012/06/15/the-mass-of-the-five-wounds/" target="_blank">votive Mass in the Sarum Use</a>, and were <a href="http://supremacyandsurvival.blogspot.com/2012/06/five-wounds-and-sacred-heart.html" target="_blank">displayed on the banner</a> of the <a href="http://www.luminarium.org/encyclopedia/pilgrimagegrace.htm" target="_blank">Pilgrimage of Grace</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Naturally this reverence survived the “Reformation” among the Recusants. But the <a href="http://mariannedorman.homestead.com/CarolineDivines.html" target="_blank">Caroline Divines retained</a> the close connection between Christ’s wounds, His Blood, and the Holy Eucharist that had characterised undivided Christendom. This is fitting, perhaps, because members of the House of Stuart would play a key if underestimated role in spreading the devotion to the Sacred Heart with which we are familiar today.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That devotion itself, however, predates St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. It was in the northern Germany of the 13th century, at the <a href="http://www.kloster-helfta.de/cms/front_content.php" target="_blank">Monastery of Helfta in Eisleben</a>, that Ss. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechtilde" target="_blank">Mechtilde</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gertrude_the_Great" target="_blank">Gertrude</a> received visions of Christ wherein He revealed truths about his heart striking similar to those that the French Visitationist nun received four centuries later. It may well be that knowledge of what had been told the saintly duo influenced Luther (a local in the Eisleben area) in the design of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luther_rose#Luther.27s_interpretation_of_his_seal" target="_blank">his seal</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In any case, when St. Margaret Mary began receiving her own visions of the Sacred Heart, her confessor was a young Jesuit, St. Claude de la Colombiere. Not only did he accept her revelations as authentic, he became one of their most zealous propagators. But in 1676, after only a year and a half at Paray-le-Monial, he was sent to London to act as chaplain to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_of_Modena" target="_blank">Maria d’Este</a>, the young wife of the Duke of York – younger brother to the King and heir to the throne. St. Claude operated out of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen's_Chapel" target="_blank">Queen’s Chapel</a>, built as a Catholic place of worship for Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of the murdered Charles I. During <a href="http://areluctantsinner.blogspot.com/2011/06/june-month-of-sacred-heart-of-jesus-st.html" target="_blank">the two years he worked there</a> before being driven out as a result of the Titus Oates plot, he made many coverts and spread knowledge of the Sacred Heart.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In 1685, the Duke of York ascended the throne as <a href="http://www.jacobite.ca/kings/james2.htm" target="_blank">James II</a>. Three years later, the King was deposed alongside the first successful invasion of England by continental army since 1066. The Royal family moved to France; on March 23, 1695, Queen Maria, implored to do so by the sisters of the Visitation in Paris, formally asked Pope Innocent XII to grant that order a proper Mass and office for the Sacred Heart. This the Pontiff did, paving the way for eventual inclusion of the Feast of the Sacred Heart in the Universal Calendar. Devotion to the Sacred Heart would remain a hallmark of the Stuarts until the extinction of their male line in 1807.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the meantime, however, religious devotion of any kind waned in the Church of England over the 18th century – leading among other things, to the emergence of John Wesley (whose own heart had been “strangely warmed” at a Moravian meeting) and the Methodists. In the 19th century, the Oxford Movement arose.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Of Tractarianism’s early leaders, Pusey had no interest in the Sacred Heart. <a href="http://www.newmanreader.org/works/meditations/meditations12.html" target="_blank">Newman</a> certainly did, as also did Faber (who used the devotion as a jumping-off point for venerating the <a href="http://archive.org/details/preciousbloodorp00fabe" target="_blank">Precious Blood</a>), <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dobree_Dalgairns" target="_blank">Dalgairns</a>, and <a href="http://enlargingtheheart.wordpress.com/2012/06/15/h-e-manning-adore-the-sacred-heart-and-pass-into-the-worship-of-the-eternal-throne/" target="_blank">Manning</a>. But what of those they left behind? Anglo-Catholicism parted into three currents: the Old English School of such as Percy Dearmer, which had little use for something as “Roman” as the Sacred Heart; the liberal school, inhabited by such as the authors of <i>Lux Mundi</i> which likewise had did not wish to be bothered; and the “Tridentine” element, which most certainly did. Around the Anglosphere, the latter built innumerable shrines to the Sacred Heart in such Anglo-Catholic bastions as <a href="http://www.gracechurchinnewark.org/anglo-catholic-tradition.php" target="_blank">Grace Church, Newark</a>; <a href="http://www.theanglocatholic.com/2010/02/more-photos-from-st-osmunds-church-salisbury/" target="_blank">St. Osmund, Salisbury</a>; <a href="http://www.suffolkchurches.co.uk/kettlebaston.htm" target="_blank">St. Mary, Kettlebaston</a>; <a href="http://resurrectionnyc.org/tour.html" target="_blank">Resurrection, New York</a>; <a href="http://www.norwichanglocatholic.org/img-sacred-heart.shtml" target="_blank">St. John the Baptist, Timberhill</a>; and countless others. Many of the members of the great Anglican religious orders, such as Cowley Father <a href="http://anglicanhistory.org/ssje/obrien_unity.html" target="_blank">W.B. Obrien</a>, were devotees of the Sacred Heart, and prayers thereto could be found in innumerable devotional manuals, such as the <i>Anglo-Catholic Prayer Book</i> and the <i><a href="http://www.jhnewman.org/resources.html" target="_blank">St. Augustine Prayer Book</a></i>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
All of which brings us back to the present, and the Ordinariates. The genius of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is that it is adaptable to the piety of every people within the Universal Church. It is not merely the French, Spanish, Italians, Germans, Portuguese, Poles, Lithuanians and so on who have their own rosters of Saints and rulers devoted to the practice. Despite the (so often legitimate!) fear of Latinisation among the Eastern Rites of the Church, it has “inculturated” very well among such particular Churches as the <a href="http://www.stmaron.org/m%20voice%20for%20June%202011.pdf" target="_blank">Maronite</a>, <a href="http://www.kaldu.org/2_st_peter_diocese/churches/st_Barbara.htm" target="_blank">Chaldean</a>, <a href="http://www.syromalabarchurchdallas.org/" target="_blank">Syro-Malabar</a>, and many others. This fact is not too surprising, given that such veneration of the Human aspect of Jesus, concentration upon His love for Mankind, and the desire to make reparation for all of the pain our sins have caused Him is (or at least, ought to be) primary in the piety of each of us. Moreover, a practice which sees as one of its chief ends the consecration of each household, diocese, and nation in the world – and, indeed, of all Humanity – to Christ should be of universal interest. Nor is it too amazing that the devotion to Christ as King of countries and individuals has flowed organically out of it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Ordinariates have been summoned into being not merely to preserve the treasures of the Anglican Patrimony for their inheritors and the Church at large, but as a springboard for the evangelisation of the English-speaking world. To succeed in such a huge endeavour, it were well to beseech the grace and favour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. After all, it is His triumph for which all our efforts are intended.</div>

Today the Prefect of the Papal Household, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georg_G%C3%A4nswein" target="_blank">Georg Gänswein</a>, was ordained to the episcopate. These photos were just taken earlier today of the magnificent event. For those who are interested, the <a href="http://anglicanpatrimony.blogspot.com/2013/01/english-baroque.html">Baroque revival</a> continues, with the Holy Father leading the way it should be noticed, and Msgr. <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Fr. Bartus recently wrote about the importance of the English
Baroque style of liturgics in Anglo-Catholicism and Ordinariate worship.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>To many traditionally minded Catholics this
liturgy looks a lot like the Extraordinary Form and they wonder what place it
has in the Ordinariate.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>As Fr. Bartus
pointed out, this liturgical style is a legitimate form of Anglican Patrimony,
celebrated and loved by many of the men and women who paved the way for Ordinariate.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I, however, would consider myself part of the Gothic or "English
Use" Anglo-Catholic tradition that relied heavily on the traditions of the
Sarum Use liturgy used until the middle of Edward VI's reign when the Book of
Common Prayer replaced it in 1549. I prefer a simple(r) altar with two candles and
bright colors and fabrics surrounding it.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>I prefer gothic vestments over roman (fiddlebacks).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I am more interested in what the Sarum missal
has to say about the music and proper liturgies of feast days than the
Tridentine Missal.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Yet, despite this preference, I have a background in the English
Baroque Anglo-Catholic liturgy.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The
parish that played a large part of my formation in seminary was The Church of
the Ascension and St. Agnes in Washington D.C.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>This parish used the Anglican Missal, which borrowed heavily from the
Roman Missal as it stood before the Holy Week reforms.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Our vestments were made in France and you
could tell that by looking at them.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We referred
to either Ritual Notes or Fortesue's Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described
more than any ancient English manual.</span></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">ASA on Easter Sunday</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">In the midst of the ceremonial<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I was mentored by the associate priest, the
late Fr. Ronald Conner, who dismissed almost everything that happened in continental
Europe after the Counter-Reformation.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He
could tell you off the top of his head what the Sarum Missal said to do in
every circumstance, and to fill in the holes, he studied Eastern liturgies
under Fr. Alexander Schmemann.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The Sarum
Missal contained much of the cross pollination of the Eastern Rites before the
fall of Constantinople .<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Procession
after procession, long litanies and troped everything was almost as common in
Sarum as it was in the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>A working knowledge of the Byzantine rites
helps you understand how to put some of the strange rubrics of the Sarum missal
into practice.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Yet despite (or perhaps because of) this mixed background I
emerged as an Ordinariate priest just as comfortable with the English Baroque
liturgics as with the "English Use" style.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>My love of the Eastern liturgies has only
grown with time and I was blessed to be able to concelebrate the Liturgy of St.
John Chrysostom at a Ruthenian parish on my third Sunday as a Catholic priest.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Given the prevalence of the English Baroque style in the Ordinariate,
I have made a conscious attempt to preserve the "English Use" in my
Ordinariate community along with many of the distinctive "low church"
elements of the Anglican Patrimony such as tippets and academic hoods.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You will, however, find elements of the
Baroque in our worship.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I have plenty of
fiddlebacks, because on a limited budget you can get traditional looking fiddlebacks
with ancient <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>symbols or some pretty ugly
gothic chasubles.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I have altar cards
because I need all the help I can get keeping the words straight switching
between the Book of Divine Worship and the Roman Missal on a daily basis.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">We are at work on building up our chapel.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We look like this now:</span></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>(S. Timothy's, Ft. Worth)</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On the latest post about <a href="http://www.jhnewman.org/" target="_blank">Bl. John's</a> on the <a href="http://www.newliturgicalmovement.org/2013/01/midnight-mass-in-ordinariate-parish.html" target="_blank">New Liturgical Movement</a>, some of the commenters ask why some of us in the Anglican Use (particularly in the Ordinariates, as opposed to the couple diocesan parishes) use "Roman" vestments instead of something supposedly "Anglican."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The assumption is, of course, that anything Baroque cannot be English, as opposed to Gothic which is. This is more of an American assumption it should be noted. Very few Anglicans or Ordinariate Catholics in England share this assumption, in my experience.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But there is a very fine and long history of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Baroque" target="_blank">English Baroque</a>, which was revived and updated following the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford_Movement" target="_blank">Oxford Movement</a>, known today as the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ritualist_movement" target="_blank">Ritualist Movement</a>. In the Church of England (and elsewhere too), the revival of the Baroque was indeed to demonstrate liturgically the ecclesiology: that <i>Roman</i> Catholicism was the true form of the faith. This produced the fine heritage of Anglo-Papalists who followed the Oxford Movement in those early days in seeking corporate reunion with the Church, today fulfilled in the Ordinariates.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Without the <a href="http://www.jhnewman.org/worship.html" target="_blank">English Baroque</a>, I would argue, we would not have the Ordinariates today. The Gothic - with many <a href="http://www.walsingham-church.org/" target="_blank">fine counter-examples</a>, largely did not do this. Notice that the majority of the bishops and hierarchy who composed and led the "groups of Anglicans to petition repeatedly and insistently to be received into full Catholic communion individually as well as corporately" were in fact men who wore lace, fiddlebacks, and who were Anglo-Papalists.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A point that I feel must be repeated again and again is that liturgy is important because it is the greatest living expression of our theology. And this, of course, includes the associated ritual, architecture, vestments, and even culture surrounding it. Thus, for many of us, the English Baroque is more than just "aping Rome" for we are now Roman, though we continue our Anglican heritage in full communion.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Baroque tradition is being continued, and furthered, by many of us in the Ordinariates not only to honor and continue our heritage from the Ritualist Movement, but also to demonstrate that the English Baroque has evolved from merely expressing confidence in the Roman Catholic faith by Anglicans to Roman Catholics expressing confidence in the Anglican patrimony. The English Baroque's first revival was about Catholic Anglicans seeking fulfillment to their religion; the English Baroque's second revival is about Anglican (Use) Catholics expressing that fulfillment in a unique Anglican ritual. That ritual goes forth into the future, lighting the way for generations of Anglican Use Catholics to come.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Similar to the English Gothic ritual, outlined best by Percy Dearmer's <i>Parson's Handbook</i>, the English Baroque ritual, outlined best by E.C.R. Lamburn's <i>Ritual Notes</i>, also draws from the Sarum Use in some respects - not "aping" Trent <i>per se</i>. But many of the stylistic and ritualistic differences from the <i>Parson's Handbook</i> found in <i>Ritual Notes</i> are indeed supplemented by and modeled on what we now call the Extraordinary Form. But there are many differences, which appear subtle to the casual observer, from this type of Anglican Use ritual and that of the Extraordinary Form which causes some irritated reactions and requests that we start being "more Anglican."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is as authentically "advanced" Anglican Use as one can get. The English Baroque is, in my opinion, the highest and most excellent way in which to ritualistically celebrate this Use of the Roman Rite. The subtle differences and the toned-down simplicity of the English Baroque (as opposed to certain Continental Baroque varieties - much less full-on Rococo that many mistake it to be) are characteristics which make it the attractive and special form of ritualism it is today.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Those who mistake Dearmer - or whatever else - to be the truest form of "Anglican" ritual simply do not know their history and should be challenged to define just what "Anglican" really means. I always remember the wise words of Fr Hunwicke: "The sooner that 'Anglicanism' is shovelled into the trash-can of History, the better." Now arguing for the most beautiful, most excellent, and highest form of "Anglican" ritual - that makes sense.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The adjective, "Anglican" for liturgy (or "Anglicanism" for doctrine), is simply what Anglicans have done (for better or worse). This is something that the Holy Father providentially recognized as he wrote in <i>Anglicanorum coetibus</i>, making sure that only those elements from our heritage which are consistent with the Catholic faith are brought with us.</div>

A group of Anglican nuns from the Community of St Mary the Virgin (CSMV) in Wantage, Oxfordshire, are to be received into the full communion of the Catholic Church in January 2013.<br /><br />Eleven sisters from the historic Anglican community will join the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham, the structure established by Pope Benedict XVI to enable groups of Anglicans to enter into the full communion of the Catholic Church whilst retaining elements of their liturgical, spiritual, and pastoral heritage. The group includes the Superior of the community, Mother Winsome CSMV.<br /><br />The eleven CSMV sisters, will be joined by Sister Carolyne Joseph, formerly of the Society of St Margaret in Walsingham, who joined the Ordinariate in January 2011. These twelve sisters will initially be established as a Public Association of the Faithful within the Personal Ordinariate. They will be known as the Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary and will continue in their work of prayer and contemplation, whilst retaining certain of their Anglican traditions and practices. Foremost amongst these is the tradition of English plainchant for which these sisters are well known.<br /><br />After consultation with Church of England authorities it has been decided that the sisters will move from their convent in Wantage and, after reception into the Catholic Church, will spend a period of time with an established Catholic community. Following this, the newly established Ordinariate community will seek to find a suitable new home.<br /><br />Monsignor Keith Newton, the Ordinary of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham, said, “The Community of St Mary the Virgin in Wantage has been at the heart of the Church of England’s Religious Life since the mid-nineteenth century. The contribution of the community to the life of the Anglican Communion has been significant, not least through the community’s care for those marginalised by society in Britain, and also in India and South Africa”.<br /><br />Speaking of the decision of the sisters to enter the Personal Ordinariate, Mgr Newton continued, “Those formed in the tradition of the Oxford Movement cannot help but be moved to respond to Pope Benedict’s generous invitation to Anglicans. The sisters have always prayed for the unity of Christians with the See of Peter, now this is to become a reality for them by means of the Ordinariate. We are truly grateful for their faith, courage, and resolve”.<br /><br />The community has been in discernment about the way forward since the publication of the Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum coetibus in 2009. Mother Winsome CSMV, the Superior of the Community, said, “We believe that the Holy Father’s offer is a prophetic gesture which brings to a happy conclusion the prayers of generations of Anglicans and Catholics who have sought a way forward for Christian unity. The future of our community is a fulfilment of its origins, and as part of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham we will continue with many of our customs and traditions, whilst also seeking to grow in Christ through our relationship with the wider Church”.<br /><br />One sister, who was ordained in the Church of England and is now to be received as a Catholic, said, “The call to Christian unity must always be the primary motivating factor in the decision of Anglicans to enter the Catholic Church. Anything which impedes that process cannot be of God, and so must be set aside to achieve this aim, which is the will of Christ”.<br /><br />Those members of the community who will remain in the Church of England have expressed their admiration and respect for those who have taken this decision. In a short statement they said, “Whilst remaining committed to their Religious vows in the Church of England the sisters of the Community of St Mary the Virgin wish the sisters joining the Ordinariate every blessing on their new life in the Catholic Church, and respect the integrity of their sense of call”.<br /><br />The Community of St Mary the Virgin was founded by the Reverend William John Butler and Mother Harriet CSMV as one of the first communities of nuns in the Church of England since the Reformation. Under the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary the community has engaged in charitable work throughout the Anglican Communion, whilst maintaining a balance with the life of prayer.</div>

This Sunday, the congregation of <a href="http://www.holynativitypayson.com/" target="_blank">Holy Nativity, Payson</a> will be <a href="http://www.patheos.com/blogs/deaconsbench/2012/12/arizona-gets-first-anglican-ordinariate-priest-and-30-of-his-parishioners-join-the-catholic-church-too/" target="_blank">received and confirmed</a> into the Catholic Church by way of the <a href="http://www.usordinariate.com/" target="_blank">Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter</a>.<br />
<br />
In addition, <a href="http://www.jhnewman.org/" target="_blank">Bl. John's, Orange County</a> continues our growth as we receive and confirm members as well.<br />

The schedule of Sunday Masses for Catholic students at USC
accommodates their studying, partying and sleeping habits. Services are
offered at 10:30 a.m., 7 p.m. and at 10 p.m., a popular option that is
lightheartedly nicknamed the "Last Chance Mass."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Upward of 400 USC students previously attended at least one Mass a
week at a now-demolished chapel just north of the university's main
campus. The showing was respectable but still a small fraction of the
estimated 10,000 Roman Catholic students — about a quarter of the
overall enrollment — at the nonsectarian university.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Officials are expecting those numbers to rise sharply starting this
week when a lavish new $29-million Catholic church and meeting center
formally open their doors. Supporters also hope the complex will become a
religious and architectural landmark for the school and the
neighborhood south of downtown Los Angeles.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On Sunday, Los Angeles
Archbishop Jose H. Gomez is scheduled to lead a Mass to consecrate the
300-seat church and inaugurate the adjacent student activity building,
called the USC <a class="taxInlineTagLink" href="http://www.latimes.com/topic/economy-business-finance/rick-caruso-PEBSL014826.topic" id="PEBSL014826" title="Rick Caruso">Caruso</a>
Catholic Center. Our Savior Catholic Church is an Italian
Romanesque-style structure — designed by the team that did the Grove and
the Americana at Brand shopping centers — with a 76-foot bell tower, a
gold-leaf apse and huge stained glass windows depicting Bible scenes and
saints.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Father Lawrence Seyer, the pastor, hopes the new complex at West 32nd
and Hoover streets will help "show students that their Catholic faith
is something relevant to their lives. They are growing in mind and body,
but we want them to grow in spirit and recognize the important things
in life such as love, truth, justice and faith."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Students who drift from religion as college freshmen often embrace it
again as upperclassmen, he said, adding: "They say: 'Partying was fun
but I feel empty.' "</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The buildings, which surround a public courtyard, are designed to
attract the attention of the thousands of student pedestrians and
bicyclists who are headed to campus just a block away.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"But in the end, a building is just a building. Ultimately it is the
programming and community life that will make them want to become
involved," Seyer said. Besides the Masses, activities will include
interfaith meals and a weekly gathering to prepare and deliver food to
the homeless on skid row.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The biggest donor and the new center's partial namesake is Rick
Caruso, the civic activist and shopping mall developer who created the
Grove in the Fairfax district and Americana at Brand in Glendale. A 1980
alumnus with two sons enrolled at USC, Caruso gave $7.5 million to the
church and center and has pledged $1 million more for programming,
officials said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So far, about $36 million has been raised in all, including $7
million for an endowment, mainly from alumni. The Catholic Archdiocese
of Los Angeles owns and runs the complex, which is affiliated with USC's
Office of Religious Life.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As an undergraduate, Caruso said, he barely noticed the previous
Catholic center and instead attended Sunday Mass with his family in
Beverly Hills. With USC student life more focused these days on and
around the campus, he said he wanted to help create "a statement that
faith is important, that Catholicism is relevant in your life however
you view Catholicism."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The church has an exterior of Italian travertine, marble floors and
altar and interior wooden arches reaching 50 feet. On a recent day,
craftsmen from the Judson Studios in Highland Park were installing some
of their final stained glass windows, each 24 feet high, illustrating
the Beatitudes from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Suspended over the altar is a 7-foot bronze sculpture of the
crucified Christ, created by Christopher Slatoff. Along the side walls,
the 14 Stations of the Cross feature original oil paintings by artist
Peter Adams, who traveled to Jerusalem to research the scenes.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Caruso said he is not a fan of the starkly modern Cathedral of Our
Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles. So for the USC project, he
was instrumental in hiring Elkus Manfredi Architects of Boston, the firm
whose designs of the Grove and the Americana triggered much debate
about re-creating historical styles.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Caruso said he wanted the church, which echoes elements of a 13th
century sanctuary, to have "a feeling of permanence and solidity ...
that calms you down and that allows you to contemplate, to pray and to
think." Contemporary design, he said, "would not have conveyed that."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Around the country over the last decade, the trend at colleges has
been to build or renovate interfaith chapels, rather than ones devoted
to one denomination, according to the Rev. Lucy Forster-Smith, national
president of the Assn. of College and University Religious Affairs.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At USC, in contrast, the motivation seems to be creating "a very
compelling and exciting space that would be inviting to USC students"
and help them become the next generation of Catholic activists, said
Forster-Smith, a Presbyterian minister who is the chaplain at Macalester
College in Minnesota.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sergio Avelar, a USC senior who is leader of the campus Catholic
community, said that some students may think the new complex is too
ornate but that most are excited about the church's beauty and the
well-appointed meeting rooms and library in the two-story center next
door.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Avelar, who grew up in Los Angeles, said the facility will be
especially important to the increasing numbers of USC students from
other states and countries who cannot attend Mass at their hometown
parishes. While the neighborhood-oriented St. Vincent Catholic Church is
nearby at Adams Boulevard and Figueroa Street, and some USC students
volunteer there, most prefer having a church adjacent to campus that
caters to their own interests and schedules, such as that 10 p.m. Mass,
he added.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Varun Soni, USC's dean of religious life and the first Hindu to hold
such an office at an American university, said he expects the complex to
become an important place for faith and activism in a neighborhood that
already has an impressive array of Protestant, Jewish, Muslim and Hindu
institutions.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"It will be a place for all students to think about their own faith
and how that connects to their own lives and careers," Soni said.</div>

Plenty of work has been done. We started with this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjk5ye3P3tTvoeFtkEWw3OwSzD1DfAA9UncDZ2pjKADJ6-2TogzVkwYaE_a3sjbdTOGRH8_aoc-GNokn2BmWnG59FiYsaSosMCEOOYrIdPN7jQyGkb-5SpIGKNhLoTAxQUZCspyO11EOsU/s1600/chapel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjk5ye3P3tTvoeFtkEWw3OwSzD1DfAA9UncDZ2pjKADJ6-2TogzVkwYaE_a3sjbdTOGRH8_aoc-GNokn2BmWnG59FiYsaSosMCEOOYrIdPN7jQyGkb-5SpIGKNhLoTAxQUZCspyO11EOsU/s320/chapel.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We had to pay 1-800-Got-Junk to haul away all those old TVs that some how ended up in there. We then move most of the junk out of the way and began to prime the walls.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3__XoLvs-kDNgcQ20bG5AGHgwOlUW9wKqvroZxEcmVYIcX8ENrlaEQbqj4PGxid5yxGZNiJhk_L6gnZOmbS_Z2zWGxUa1H0hMQqVzlzTPGHUAnqrb0mIXmLkniC9jA3TV5jg0n7YtPgo/s1600/20121103_121717.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3__XoLvs-kDNgcQ20bG5AGHgwOlUW9wKqvroZxEcmVYIcX8ENrlaEQbqj4PGxid5yxGZNiJhk_L6gnZOmbS_Z2zWGxUa1H0hMQqVzlzTPGHUAnqrb0mIXmLkniC9jA3TV5jg0n7YtPgo/s320/20121103_121717.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Goodbye pink walls and green chancel! We went with an off white for the walls and a Marian blue for the chancel.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTlAbXK18GuWNgKzPAIU67ZKf1kdmCFpsnrOpIYTqRBUCcQzFRRi-J0ZEEmvPmY2sBGrRSD6yXVLTa0iOVMVAyGBAbrEO7mvERe42EZvkXJFDlU-zUDgHrgsnIB7Rxp6peK_WPgVHiZfQ/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTlAbXK18GuWNgKzPAIU67ZKf1kdmCFpsnrOpIYTqRBUCcQzFRRi-J0ZEEmvPmY2sBGrRSD6yXVLTa0iOVMVAyGBAbrEO7mvERe42EZvkXJFDlU-zUDgHrgsnIB7Rxp6peK_WPgVHiZfQ/s1600/photo.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Then we had to move more of the junk (that we couldn't find away to get rid of) out so we could clean up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRDAMfMEWSC5z3PGYYPZKiv1xbMKTOkjP6C2V5cmI09Ndmw6x_mdXigC5R4ugRXQ-2yoM2dCpmPzkrwWTE-pnMxMLKKPksf6pnFo2M4wDHTemJktViMre7Q3ZIMlqxZzyIGjT-DnFmxNw/s1600/20121117_115325.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRDAMfMEWSC5z3PGYYPZKiv1xbMKTOkjP6C2V5cmI09Ndmw6x_mdXigC5R4ugRXQ-2yoM2dCpmPzkrwWTE-pnMxMLKKPksf6pnFo2M4wDHTemJktViMre7Q3ZIMlqxZzyIGjT-DnFmxNw/s320/20121117_115325.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Turns out the floor wasn't half bad! Next it was time to move in the 4 pews we have plus a few kneelers we have to use with chairs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyDKDZ-KMszpB4iyrQqJ6h3rdrNcKd36_veamBd4dpL25gUZHh-cD5xdGhfJ4RR5TuoH-mEFnw8KC0n_2yOf6o5gYEFpFwdKweFFMi-m2IAqpChdfgHauodjimYsJP5r7xKiml_kn_N3o/s1600/20121117_171831.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyDKDZ-KMszpB4iyrQqJ6h3rdrNcKd36_veamBd4dpL25gUZHh-cD5xdGhfJ4RR5TuoH-mEFnw8KC0n_2yOf6o5gYEFpFwdKweFFMi-m2IAqpChdfgHauodjimYsJP5r7xKiml_kn_N3o/s320/20121117_171831.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This Friday we expect our custom built wooden altar to be installed. Altar rails should be coming in the next few months.<br />
<br />
Stay tuned for more fine touches...and for us to deal with the sacristy!<br />
<br />

This past Sunday, if I understand correctly, the <a href="http://www.blessedjohnhenrynewmanfellowship.ca/" target="_blank">Fellowship of Blessed John Henry Newman</a> in Victoria, British Columbia had their first Mass inside of their new building. These photos demonstrate how a recognizably Anglican liturgy can thrive in the Catholic Church, even on a small budget. Most Ordinariate groups are small congregations like this, so making use of what we have, and what we can aquire on the cheap, can be done very well indeed!</div>

by Fr. Andrew Bartus </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Beginning last month, in October 2012, the Universal Church entered the Year of Faith. This calling comes to those of us in the Ordinariates in a unique way. We have a special role to play in the New Evangelization, and this role is one I want to bring to your consideration while also sharing the story of the <a href="http://www.jhnewman.org/" target="_blank">Blessed John Henry Newman mission</a> of the Ordinariate in Orange County, California: the role is that of growing in holiness and compelling people to come in.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now that those of us composing the first wave of the Ordinariate have arrived, and the climate of ceaseless battle for our heritage has ended, a very different sort of work of building for the future has begun. This is, in the best sense possible, a good feeling. But the sort of work one does on the defense is not quite the same one does on the offense. This Year of Faith and its emphasis on reviving the New Evangelism comes at a good time for us in the Ordinariate.</div>
<br />
<b>Mission of Blessed John’s</b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The highlights of the history of Blessed John’s are online: from <a href="http://anglicanpatrimony.blogspot.com/2011/02/anglican-use-society-of-orange-county.html" target="_blank">the time I began seeking any interest</a> among Anglicans in Orange County for the Ordinariate, until last month when we <a href="http://anglicanpatrimony.blogspot.com/2012/10/newmans-feast.html" target="_blank">celebrated Newman’s patronal feast</a> with choral evensong alongside a local Episcopal congregation that hosted us in our formation. Without the Internet the Ordinariates would not exist, nor would Bl. John’s. We have a unique history, no doubt, and not one that can be repeated anywhere else. So if you are looking for a “how to” formula for success in congregational growth, you may be sorely disappointed. After this next round of confirmations in Advent, of which there will be seven people, we will have a total of forty-seven members of Bl. John’s. This includes my family, myself, and the children of others. Our average Sunday attendance is thirty. We are a small group right now, but we are growing. Having existed for only four months, this is not a bad start.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We should not, of course, get caught up in the numbers game, though it is an important part of the evaluation of success, if we are honest. But the American obsession with numbers being the sure and certain sign of success is wrong. One only needs to think of some of the mega churches here in America and their many errors to realize this. I continue to tell my congregation and myself that if we focus on trying to become holy ourselves – to continue our conversions within the Church as we started it outside her before – that the numbers will take care of themselves. God doesn’t judge the success of a ministry based on numbers; this is not just a bromide that tiny congregations repeat to make themselves feel better, but the absolute truth!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To this end, our goal of evangelization is a part of the greater goal: to get to heaven. Getting to heaven, of course, means complete union with God and thus, becoming like Him in holiness of life. So if we are truly striving to become holy, we will give our all – our very best of our ourselves, our time, our resources, our talents, our services – to each other, embracing the vision of the Holy Father for the Ordinariates.</div>
<br />
<b>History of Bl. John’s</b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In May of 2010, I was contacted by a couple of people in Orange County – Latin Rite Catholics – who said they had some Anglican and Episcopalian friends who were interested in the Ordinariate and wanted me to come down from Los Angeles to speak to them. They were also interested in forming a prayer group for the success of the Ordinariates in converting people. I agreed happily, and asked them to put me in touch via email with those people; these in turn began telling their friends and putting me in touch with them. The months went by, and in early 2011, I eventually became acquainted with Fr. David Baumann, the rector of Blessed Sacrament Episcopal Church, who told me that he had long been involved with the Ecumenical Officer of the Diocese of Orange, Fr. Al Baca, in praying for some kind of corporate unity between Anglicans and Catholics. The email contacts grew and, after I realized there was quite a sizeable group interested in the Ordinariate in Orange County, I worked with Fr. Baumann and Fr. Baca to host an informational meeting at Blessed Sacrament Episcopal on the Ordinariate.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I made a decision to announce to people that evening that if there was a decent number of committed people present, who did not just wish to form a “friends of the Ordinariate” social group, but rather an actual mission parish for the Ordinariate, that I would be willing to drive down to Orange County and help them. That first meeting occurred on April 3, 2011. I set out two forms for people to sign: an “interested” form, for those people who were interested and wished to keep up with news and occasionally join us for worship, and a “founding members” form, for those who wished to commit themselves totally to forming a mission parish as soon as possible. I think I vocalized what many were internally thinking: Anglicans and Episcopalians were really good at forming groups and constituencies to talk, but the lack of real action in the past was very depressing. So actually bonding together with the action of taking our corporate identity and heritage and – ultimately, us – as the Anglican patrimony into full communion with the See of Peter was very attractive. Seventeen people signed the “Founding members” form and another fifteen people signed the “interested” form, which gave me the signal to move ahead.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Our founding service, as the Anglican Use Society of Orange County, occurred at Blessed Sacrament Episcopal Church on May 11, 2011, where we had Choral Evensong, Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, and a Marian Procession for May Devotions, with prayers of intercession to Our Lady under her titles of Walsingham and Atonement, as well as to Blessed John Henry Newman. After that time until immediately before our reception into the Church nearly a year later on July 3, 2012, we meet nearly every Sunday evening at 6:00pm for Evensong, a “Bun fight,” California style – usually with a nice Central Coast Red and an hour of catechism using the Evangelium curriculum. I would lead Evangelium in the mornings in Los Angeles after Mass, and then drive to Orange County and re-teach it that evening. Sundays were incredibly long and tiring, but also incredibly rewarding.</div>
<br />
<b>Our Future and What Worked</b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We are about to embark on an outreach plan at Bl. John’s to see what happens. What I plan to do, starting in January, is to combine service to the community with sharing the faith that leads us to want to do what we do. So what I hope to do is this:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- <u>Ask a Catholic</u>: Some members and myself will go to public centers on certain Saturdays and set up a small booth to answer questions about the Catholic faith and pass out information about Bl. John’s, the Ordinariate, and the Church in general with the theme of, “we converted for these compelling reasons and we invite you to consider these reasons too.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- <u>Theology on Tap</u>: An event on certain Thursday nights where Catholics speak on some theological topic or read from the Scriptures or the Fathers of the Church or some other writer at the Olde Ship in Santa Ana. Ye Olde Ship is an English pub, so it’s very appropriate! Those who attend this will also not only be invited to Masses and other parish events, but also our community service outreaches.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- <u>Service Outreaches</u>: A member of our parish will help lead some kind of community service, such as working in soup kitchens, helping St. Vincent de Paul with their homeless clothing drives or feedings, or the Knights of Columbus, etc.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- <u>Wednesday Education</u>: This is a weekly time of fellowship and adult and simultaneous children’s classes. Since most of our people drive a half-hour or more from all over the Orange County area and beyond, and since we are only granted space on Sundays at 3:00 pm for Masses, it is difficult to have adult or children’s Sunday School. So instead, we will begin having a parish meal at 6:00 pm in the parish hall of the church we meet inside and then around 7:15 we’ll have simultaneous adult and children’s classes, in addition to having the next round of Evangelium for Easter confirmations.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<u>Start a local “Ordinariate Informational Meeting”</u> - But what worked at the start, and which I commend to anyone who wishes to explore the possibility of starting a mission for the Ordinariate is – after receiving a blessing from the Ordinary and your local bishop – start advertising on local websites and Ordinariate-friendly websites, Facebook and Twitter, local newspapers, and fliers around town for an “Ordinariate Informational Meeting” preferably held at a local church. Do as I did and at that meeting after presenting a talk and taking questions, present two forms for people: those who wish to form an Ordinariate mission congregation as soon as possible, and those who wish to keep in touch and keep up to date with the develop of this group.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<u>Typical Early Group Composition</u> - If the number is more than ten committed people with a clear potential for growth, then that is all you really need to move ahead. The group will likely be composed of former Anglicans who are currently Catholic, and hopefully some current Anglicans who wish to become so. There will probably be sympathetic Latin Rite Catholics in the group who wish to help. While they should be informed that they are not allowed to be members of the Ordinariate, their help is vital to new missions. This should not be seen as sheep stealing from the local diocese as they rightly see us as fellow Catholics laborers in the Lord’s vineyard; yet at the same time, we are not to seek out Latin Rite Catholics who are simply dissatisfied for whatever reason. They should know this from the start.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<u>Evensong and Catechism</u> - The next step would be to find a place to meet in for something similar to what we did: have Evening Prayer, or Evensong if you have a musician in your midst, a time of fellowship, and catechesis preparing those who need to be received and confirmed. I encouraged my already-Catholic members to attend with those who were not yet, to help us bond as a new family. They were eager to do so as we all came from different parishes, and were happy to deeper in their faith with the others.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With continual advertisement and evangelism, the word of mouth will begin to spread in the area and new people will trickle in over time.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<u>Becoming a Mission Parish</u> - If groups start this way and are viable, and have started with the Ordinary’s knowledge and blessing, they should be able to work with the local Latin Rite bishop to erect this group as a Mission parish of the Ordinariate after locating an Ordinariate priest not attached to a group. Currently we have several priests not attached to Ordinariate groups and Lord willing, will have many more. But without both clergy and laity actively and aggressively evangelizing and forming new groups the Ordinariate will stagnate early on and will remain small – remember the early Apostles didn’t just tell people about Jesus, but built churches to bring Jesus to them.</div>
<br />
<b>Conclusion: Heart of the Matter</b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The main theme of striving after holiness and all that comes with it – truth, charity, right belief, solid liturgy, sound preaching, a loving community – cannot be emphasized enough. If you have the goal of using our Anglican heritage and Catholic faith to bring yourself and others to heaven and giving God the most possible glory in all that we do in our unique way, primarily liturgically (Cf.

--><i>Sacrosanctum Concilium</i>, 10.), the rest of the details will sort themselves out. We must never lose sight of this fact.
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We have enough feel-good congregations and church leaders in all denominations in America. I would rather have smaller numbers in our parishes who were faithful Anglican Use Catholics striving after genuine holiness, than to have larger parishes with lots of money, if that is the choice we must make. It should not be, but in some cases it might be. In our time of increasing hostility to Christ and his Church, Catholics need to step up and stop thinking of the Church as a cultural hotspot. And many leaders need to stop thinking of the Church as merely a corporation to run. Souls are on the line here. When we get imprisoned or worse for staying faithful to the gospel, they won’t be torturing us for running a successful non-profit organization!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While we in the Ordinariate are fresh, we must be bold and preach truth charitably, but boldly. Teach plainly and to the concerns of our age. Priests must celebrate the mysteries of the Church with solemnity. Laity especially must actively evangelize in our communities. And above all pray constantly and fervently. These actions will make us holy. This will make us grow. And perhaps one aspect of that growth might be numerically. If a formula for growth is what you came here for, then boldly promoting holiness is as close to one as I can give.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
People weren’t willing to go to the lions for a Mass they felt like they had to “get out of the way” before Sunday shopping in the marketplace and chariot races at four. This type of cultural Christianity has reduced vocations and created the second largest denomination in the United States: Ex-Catholics.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My hope is that all parishes and missions of the Ordinariate will grow and begin to plant satellite groups partitioned off in years to come, avoiding mega-church status. (Some of our number may soon have that potential, such as Walsingham in Houston.) And if we actively pursue holiness we will have a good increase of Ordinariate vocations to staff those satellite parishes.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Our goal is to reach non-Catholics of every variety, and an Anglican Use that is radically holy will be very effective. I think this is what the Holy Father was ultimately inspired by (Cf. Pope Benedict XVI's Address to the England and Wales Conference of Bishops at Oscott College, September 2010), and he is counting on you and me to help bring this about. We need to invite our former Anglican and non-Catholic brothers and sisters home with us in as generous a way as possible. We cannot view the Ordinariates as a departure from what we were, but rather we must see it as a fulfillment of who we all really are. And we do this in full collaboration with the local dioceses and eparchies in the New Evangelism in this Year of Faith. We cannot afford to be separated from non-Catholics, as they cannot afford to be separated from us. It is a scandal that has just been granted a more corporate solution. But we must start seeking them out rather than waiting for them to stumble into our doorways just as our Lord taught. “And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges, and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled’” (Lk. 14:23).</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>(The majority of Ordinariate parish administators and two ordinands) </i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This year's Anglican Use Conference was hosted by the <a href="http://www.ourladyofhopesociety.org/" target="_blank">Our Lady of Hope Society</a> and its hosting parish, St. Therese Little Flower in Kansas City. It was much smaller than last year's gathering as it wasn't at one of the larger parishes, but it was a very good time for us all to meet together nonetheless. Most of the "first wave" Ordinariate clergy here in North America came and it turned into an unofficial clergy conference, which was welcome and needed.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Our theme was evangelism, being in this Year of Faith, and being the start of the Ordinariate here. It was good to share ideas and discuss our future together. A couple of the groups in the Ordinariate are proper parishes, but most are small groups numbering under one-hundred people, so hearing how the first few months of existence have been for each of us was necessary.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As is the case in most gatherings like this, it was the informal conversations we had among our number that were of the most benefit, but the sessions themselves were very helpful. The hope is to have a formal conference of Ordinariate clergy and ordinands sometime in February in Houston.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-hVQpsmc5nFVcI6ocVsoBRve05sSAfuXEfU32LHx9BGS1DTXhqU9T_jnVtyfkr0jy4shjPUakfHXKZ9AtzhdV5zJyOHSsfXx0U5TGAmLYDNL39vwaS9QcoDA97YdDBBEQdjTXoMK7XUQ/s1600/ordinariateclergy2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-hVQpsmc5nFVcI6ocVsoBRve05sSAfuXEfU32LHx9BGS1DTXhqU9T_jnVtyfkr0jy4shjPUakfHXKZ9AtzhdV5zJyOHSsfXx0U5TGAmLYDNL39vwaS9QcoDA97YdDBBEQdjTXoMK7XUQ/s400/ordinariateclergy2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i> (Clergy listening intently to Mgr. Steenson)</i></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We all left with encouragement for the future and hopefully this next year will bear some real tangible fruits of this hope! The immediate sign of this hope is that we have another crop of clergy coming in, many with groups of their own, and many who wish to start groups in their regions. They will be in Houston in November for the second round of training and discernment for those who hope to compose the second wave of Ordinariate clergy.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Instead of posting details of plans that may or may not work out as intended for the Ordinariate at large, I will begin posting plans as they begin to be enacted.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One plan I can safely announce is that <a href="http://anglicanpatrimony.blogspot.com/2011/05/national-pilgrimage-for-us-ordinariate.html" target="_blank">the idea of having a National Pilgrimage</a> to the American Walsingham shrine in Houston has been approved and the first pilgrimage will occur, hopefully by this time next year! The hope is to combine the traditional Anglican Use Conference into this pilgrimage for one big annual event and have clergy and parishioners caravan from Ordinariate, Anglican Use, Latin Rite, and other parishes all over North America join together once a year who have a devotion to Our Lady of Walsingham. Please pray for the success of the planning and implementation of this large endeavor. We hope to make Fr. Hope Patton proud.</div>

For our worship we resurrected a side chapel that had been turned into a shrine. This has given us a very workable worship setting, but a very <i>French</i> looking setting.<br />
<br />

<br />
While many an Anglo Catholic parish has looked like this due to a Ritual Notes emphasis on the liturgy, I would much prefer and English looking setting drawn from the Parson's Handbook school of Anglo Catholicism.<br />
<br />
This dream may come to fruition, as out group has been given a new worship space. An adjoining building, named after Mother Seton and a former convent, was recently given to the parish. Inside this building there is a chapel, although it has been used as a meeting room for the past decade. This chapel will now be exclusively used for our worship, and this will also allow us to finally have Sunday morning services.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As you can see, much work is needed to turn this back into a chapel, but the area for the chancel is there along with a sacristy in the next room with a working sacrarium. We have already moved most of the junk out of the room, and we are about to paint next weekend.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Our altar and altar rail will be wood and we plan on using tapestries around the chapel to give it a more English look. Stay tuned for updates!</div>

Thank heaven Fr. Hunwicke is back, this time enriching us all with his explorations of "eodem sensu eademque sententia" (Part <a href="http://liturgicalnotes.blogspot.com/2012/10/tutissimus-index-1-eodem-sensu-eademque.html" target="_blank">1</a>, <a href="http://liturgicalnotes.blogspot.com/2012/10/tutissimus-index-2-eodem-sensu-eademque.html" target="_blank">2</a>, <a href="http://liturgicalnotes.blogspot.com/2012/10/tutissimus-index-3-eodem-sensu-eademque.html" target="_blank">3</a> and <a href="http://liturgicalnotes.blogspot.com/2012/10/tutissimus-index-4-eodem-sensu-eademque.html" target="_blank">4</a>) and the hermenutic of continuity. His point about the abuse of the so-called Vincentian Canon is important, as that abuse was in high force among many Anglicans in times past. Most Anglicans are not really aquainted with it anymore, but the "Continuing" churches and Forward in Faith-North America types here in the United States, Canada and Australia still appeal to it to justify their <a href="http://anglicanpatrimony.blogspot.com/2010/09/dispensing-with-branch-theory.html" target="_blank">Branch Theory ecclesiology</a>.</div>

And in other Ordinariate news, Mgr Edwin Barnes has stirred up a hornet's nest by <a href="http://bishedwins.blogspot.com/2012/10/towards-pastoral-council.html?showComment=1350844614245#c2737775778529063492" target="_blank">daring to address</a> the fact that the Book of Divine Worship (BDW) was based on an inferior Prayer Book - the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. Steve Cavanaugh took up the challenge of <a href="http://anglicanusenews.blogspot.com/2012/10/comparing-collects.html" target="_blank">comparing the 1662 with the BDW</a>; and an anonymous latinist (you know who you are) sent <a href="http://foolishnesstotheworld.wordpress.com/2012/10/25/smm1-weighs-in-on-bowdlerized-collects-in-the-book-of-divine-worship/" target="_blank">something in to Mrs. Gyapong</a> showing it to be so - but feeling that perhaps "bowdlerised" is too strong of a word. Fr. Charles Hough IV, the pastor of <a href="http://www.walsingham-church.org/site/Welcome.html" target="_blank">Our Lady of Walsingham</a> (OLW) parish, the principal church of the Ordinariate, invited me to concelebrate the Sunday High Mass while I was in town. It was wonderful to see a thriving Ordinariate parish that showed forth the best parts of our Anglican Patrimony!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzNl_6Kne-JuRm9Wa8jVRBv_4p9Qc9_JbbH9spxxeRzx6opeKlmLxLHOF2_D3yMgQ1-NFXJ6Rhpjk97DEvjp1bquGMw69hRsdRjE4dFODxOcrKVGNSOyQm_Ju-4cp335Ic7mXeN3yoS4s/s1600/OLW.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzNl_6Kne-JuRm9Wa8jVRBv_4p9Qc9_JbbH9spxxeRzx6opeKlmLxLHOF2_D3yMgQ1-NFXJ6Rhpjk97DEvjp1bquGMw69hRsdRjE4dFODxOcrKVGNSOyQm_Ju-4cp335Ic7mXeN3yoS4s/s320/OLW.jpg" width="212" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
OLW looks like so many of the Anglo Catholic churches of my past. Most of the parishes that became known for their Anglo Catholic worship in the Episcopal Church started out as mainstream Episcopal parishes. You could always tell by the architecture what the church had been like at its first service. Most Anglo Catholic churches have wooden altars, altar rails and accents pointing back to their past as plain churches whereas churches that were founded by Anglo Catholics tended to have more marble features like continental Catholic churches. OLW has all the wooden accents that make it looks like an old Episcopal Church that swam up the liturgical stream towards Anglo Catholicism. Even though the current OLW church was only built in the past few decades, it looks much older. It looks like the chapel and side altars where added on years later, perhaps at the prompting of a priest who spent years teaching the parish the Catholic Faith, In reality this building was put together all at the same time, but I like the fact that it looks like an older, worked on and Catholicized Episcopal parish.<br />
<br />
Liturgically the parish is a reminder of the "Prayer Book Catholic" parishes. While there are three sacred ministers, they stand three abreast at the altar and tend to move little. It is more <a href="http://anglicanhistory.org/dearmer/handbook/1899/index1899.html" target="_blank">Parson's Handbook</a> than<a href="http://anglicanhistory.org/liturgy/ritual_notes_1894/" target="_blank"> Ritual Notes</a>. The Book of Divine Worship Rite I Mass is accompanied by a vested choir using the 1940 Hymnal and adding the minor propers along with a Des Prez motet last Sunday. Distinctive to OLW is their tradition of offering both species of the Holy Eucharist by intinction, as opposed to offering the chalice as I believe most Ordinariate parishes do currently.<br />
<br />
The OLW family is warm and welcoming and truly understand their place and their responsibility as torch bearers for us in the Ordinariate.<br />

If you are in Houston, or are with in driving distance, you owe it to yourself to check out OLW.<br />
